Sweet-Bitter
I know bitter-sweet is the usual way it's said but I just felt like switching it :P.
Why is it bittersweet anyway? Is it the alphabetical order or because bad news usually come before good news? I needed to write and I got this idea from a friend's random tweet about how 'f
alling in love is all bitter-sweet'
and in my head I was like 'really, what isn't?'
It's the reason why an essay with a thesis like "Yadi Yada has pros and cons" would be pretty weak. Like what doesn't have pros and cons? What's all-good with nothing bad about it? This is a debatable one but it's just as accurate as: what's all-terrible, with no hint of goodness in it? It pretty much forms the basis of choices - weighing the consequences and deciding the lesser evil.
When nothing seems right, when you can't find a reason to be happy and grateful to God or even when everything seems too good to be true, there is always a teeny weeny bit of the flip side in there that you at least need to be aware of.
Not too long ago, someone I knew got robbed and raped to death. It was absolutely painful and was one of the hardest situation to find a reason to be thankful for. Probably not everyone would agree but being alive and watching all her loved ones die could have been a more painful experience for. However, she was a Christian so I'm hoping she got things right with God and is having an awesome time in paradise. Now that is something to be comforted by.
When it's bitter, find something sweet to be happy about. When it's sweet be aware of the fact that it could be bitter. Not that you should mess up the amazing stuff you've got going by hunting down
possible
flaws, but be aware of the possibility of it going wrong.
These things are the thrills of the game and they are the reasons we go on roller coasters. They are amazingly scary. It would be great practice to enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Challenge yourself to go outside your comfort zone;
“it’s the practice of believing that we really do need both the bitter and the sweet, and that a life of nothing but sweetness rots both your teeth and your soul. Bitter is what makes us strong, what forces us to push through, what helps us earn the lines on our faces and the calluses on our hands. Sweet is nice enough, but bittersweet is beautiful, nuanced, full of depth and complexity. Bittersweet is courageous, gutsy, audacious, earthy."
